This programme will provide students with an understanding of computer science and its applications. The programme will equip students with broad and deep knowledge of the theory, design, and application of computer systems, to help students think abstractly, approach problems methodically, and develop sound solutions.

Key knowledge areas covered as part of the Computer Science curriculum include, but are not limited to: the history of computing, software engineering and design, data structures and algorithms, mobile applications, human-computer interaction, programming languages, business management, geospatial computing, databases, and the design, implementation and management of modern operating systems. Due to the ubiquity of computing, students who graduate from this course can pursue further studies, conduct research, and develop applications in virtually any field imaginable. Among others, Computer Science knowledge and skills are applicable to the development of gene sequencing algorithms; the design of user interfaces for different devices, design and implementation of databases, to enhance storage, retrieval and processing of big data; creation of computer generated graphics and special effects, in the gaming industry; and analyzing social data from online communication. Beyond offerings from other local universities and institutions of higher learning, the Computer Science curriculum is unique in that it covers core theoretical building blocks of Computer Science and related applications in ICT. Programmes from other institutions of higher learning are mainly applied in nature, which limits their ability to produce ground breaking innovations that others can adapt or implement and manage.

Entry Criteria

For entry at first year, candidates should hold Malawi School Certificate of Education (MSCE), “O” Level or IGCSE with at least 6 credits including Mathematics, English and Physics/Physical Science).

Candidates with the following qualifications may be considered for admission into the Computer Science programme at second year:

1. Holders of University Certificate in Computer Science, from the University of Malawi
2. Holders of Diploma in Computing or any related field from a recognised institution of higher learning with a pass of distinction or credit and an MSCE with at least four credits, including Mathematics, Physics/Physical Science and English.

In both cases above, applicants shall also be required to fulfil the following conditions:

1. Have a minimum of two years working experience, after attaining their qualifications
2. Must not have been withdrawn from the University of Malawi, on academic grounds.
