The programme aims to develop capacity in computer network engineering that can competently handle both the computing and electrical engineering aspects in networking.

Computer Network Engineering is a discipline that involves a large number of issues from diverse perspectives. It cuts across the electrical engineering perspective (where networking involves design and analysis of multiple access techniques, ways of coping with network congestion and losses) to the computer science perspective (where networking involves designing the architecture of computer networks, network programming, network security and optimization). While each of these disciplines offers courses that involve some aspects of networking in their curriculum, we believe that a graduate curriculum whose aim is to produce Computer Network Engineers who are knowledgeable in all aspects of networking, and therefore are able to contribute to the design and analysis of information systems in the broadest context, is essential.

The Computer Network Engineering programme will provide direct access to the wide variety of exciting careers in this field. It has been structured in such a way that successful students could easily transit to professional certification and other unique specialty programs such as A+, Microsoft and Cisco for Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA) and Cisco Certified Network Professional (CCNP) certifications. Graduates from this programme can work as LAN/WAN specialists; network administrators; Internet/intranet administrators; network designers, engineers, and security experts

Entry Criteria

For entry at first year, candidates should hold Malawi School Certificate of Education (MSCE), “O” Level or IGCSE with at least 6 credits including Mathematics, English and Physics/Physical Science).

Additionally candidates with the following qualifications shall also be considered for admission: 

1. Holders of University Certificate in Computer Science 
2. Holders of Diploma in Computing or any related field from a recognised institutions of higher learning with a pass of distinction or credit and an MSCE with at least four credits including Mathematics, Physics/Physical Science and English.
3. Holders of the Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA) qualification with a MSCE certificate with 6 credits including Mathematics, Physics/Physical Science and English.
